ΣΥΝΕΝΤΕΥΞΗ στην Σύλβια Πετρίδη
Ο κ. Χρήστος ήταν πάντα ο αγαπημένος καθηγητής των μαθητών. Οι ικανότητες και η αφοσίωση στο λειτούργημά του, έμελλαν να καθορίσουν την πετυχημένη διαδρομή που χάραξε. Ο λόγος για τον Γενικό Διευθυντή του Ελληνικού Σχολείου «Socrates – Demosthenes», τον Χρήστο Αδαμόπουλο.
Αφετηρία αυτής της γόνιμης πορείας είναι το έτος 1981, όταν προσλαμβάνεται ως ο πρώτος Εκπαιδευτικός Φυσικής Αγωγής στα σχολεία, δημιουργώντας σχέσεις εμπιστοσύνης με τους μαθητές του, οι οποίοι σε κάθε τους συνάντηση, τον χαιρετούν εγκάρδια και του δείχνουν το θαυμασμό και την εκτίμησή τους.
Το 2008, με προτροπή του τότε προέδρου της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας, του κ. Βασίλη Μπαλαμπάνου, αναλαμβάνει τη θέση του Γενικού Διευθυντή, επαληθεύοντας τον τότε Γενικό Γραμματέα Εκπαίδευσης, τον κ. Γιάννη Θεοδωσόπουλο, ο οποίος πέρα από τη πίστη του στις ικανότητες του κ. Αδαμόπουλου, είχε προβλέψει την επιτυχία του, λέγοντάς του χαρακτηριστικά τα εξής «…θυμήσου τα λόγια μου Χρήστο, εσύ σε αυτή τη θέση θα γράψεις ιστορία, γεννήθηκες γι ‘αυτό το αξίωμα!». Αυτή η όμορφη σχέση έχει συνεχιστεί και με τον σημερινό πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας κ.Νικόλαο Παγώνη και την τωρινή γραμματέα της Εκπαίδευσης Ζωή Μπάτση.
Εμπνευσμένος από τους Ολυμπιονίκες και τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, με δυνατή πίστη σε υψηλά ιδανικά ο κ. Αδαμόπουλος, συνεχίζει να δίνει το δικό του αγώνα για την προώθηση της αριστείας.
Σε συνεργασία με τους εκάστοτε συναδέλφους του, κερδίζει κάθε μέρα και μια καινούργια μάχη για την εδραίωση μιας εποικοδομητικής συνεργασίας με γονείς και μαθητές, αλλά και με τους εκπαιδευτικούς και αρμόδιους φορείς του εκπαιδευτικού συστήματος.
Ίσως, το μόνο του παράπονο είναι η έλλειψη προσωπικού χρόνου, μιας και τον απορροφούν τα καθήκοντά του και στερείται την οικογένειά του. Όμως, τα παιδιά και η σύζυγός του, δείχνουν μεγάλη κατανόηση, αγάπη και αφοσίωση. Όσο για τα μελλοντικά του σχέδια; Είναι πρωτίστως τόσο η ενδυνάμωση, η προέκταση και εξάπλωση των σχολείων μας, όσο και η διάδοση των ιδεωδών του ελληνισμού και του Πολιτισμού μας. Με τέτοιους «καπετάνιους» στο τιμόνι, το μέλλον των σχολείων μας, προβλέπεται πέρα για πέρα φωτεινό!
I want to know this guy’s story. I mean, who he really is, I thought to myself after watching Chris Adamopoulos, the General Director of the Socrates-Demosthenes School speaking to the public in a press conference. He seemed quite elegant and yet reserved, polite and gentle with graceful gestures and expressive facial appearances.
Having heard numerous things about Mr. Adamopoulos, I realized that people usually tend to criticize the unknown, the unfamiliar. The question always is though: how many out there actually know the individual behind the position, the achievement, the real person behind the scenes? Considering that to be a good story, I contacted Mr. Adamopoulos’ office the next day and booked an appointment for an interview.
On my way there, I found myself wondering what it really takes to manage the Greek schools, the students, the board of directors, the faculty members. That thought only made me even more excited to meet the person behind it all – up, close and personal.
I found him sitting at his desk, quiet, focused, concentrated. He raised his head; he smiled kindly and he offered me a seat. Thanking him for his time, I sat across from him, and I began the interview by merely asking him:
– So, Mr. Adamopoulos, with all due respect, what are the main responsibilities of acquiring such an outstanding position?
He looked at me kindly in the eyes, he inhaled deeply and he said:
– I could easily talk for hours about my responsibilities; there is no end to them. But if I had to sum it up I would say I administer the overall operational system of our School, our 5 campuses, around 1300 students, over 120 faculty members, as well as our numerous head office staff. But my most important task is to properly promote our School, not only within the Greek community but also Quebec and why not through-out the entire world.
He allowed his gaze to drift away and without hesitating, he continued.
– When I took this job, I promised myself to bring our School to a whole different level, constantly evolving, becoming better, stronger, becoming eventually renowned. We have the capacity to make history; after all, we are Greeks! I have given my all to unify our educational system. Initially, nobody trusted anybody. I had to go through a rough ride to gain the respect, admiration, support and trust of our teachers, principals, board of directors, administrative staff, even of our community and government. But WE DID IT! We have accomplished the impossible, and now, strongly united, only the sky is our limit.
I noticed how passionately he was talking about his job, his co-workers, his staff and I dared to ask him about his childhood.
– Would it be too much to ask you about the way things came to be? Few intimate things about your personal background.
He smiled compassionately, and I was able to see his memories unravelling in his mind:
– I grew up in the area of Cote-des-Neiges just a block away from St-George’s Cathedral, in the basement of which I attended for the first and second grades of Socrates. After that, my parents transferred me in Logan, the English public school. I continued at Outremont High School and then attended Champlain College, McGill University and finally, for my Administration of Education degree, the University of Montreal.
– What would you consider to be the most precious thing you have learned during these years?
– Numerous things, undoubtedly! But the one thing I always have close to my heart is what my proud, immigrant parents taught me, and that is to be persistent, determinant, committed, focused, open minded, kind, polite and a true professional. Nobody wants a loser; everybody needs to be around fighters, leaders and winners. This life is worth living, only if you have a purpose, a goal. We need to leave our imprints in the sand of time, make our lifetime worth something, do our best to improve our society and to help one another, be kind and generous, learn and evolve. That is what it is all about, the rest, as Shakespeare says, is silence.
